How to plan a budget trip
Traveling broadens our mind. The more we travel, the more cultures we discover, the more history we learn and the more new people we meet. The majority of people dream about trips abroad but they have no possibility to do that, or just consider it to be so. Many people think that travelling requires much money and time, but, in fact, it is not always the case. If you have little budget, you still can travel not only within your country. This article will help you with some tips and tricks how to make your dreams come true and help you plan a budget trip.
1. Choose the right transport
It goes without saying that travelling by bus is much cheaper than travelling by plane. Various tourist agencies have plenty of packed bus tours which will not cost you a lot. If you choose this option, you should be ready that you will have to stick to the set itinerary, follow all the guide’s rules and instructions and see only what was planned by the agency. By all means, you will be able to create your own itinerary, but in the framework of the given days and places. In addition, you should be ready to spend much time in the bus, which may not be a good option for those who have long legs or problems with a back. When choosing the tour, check that there are no night trips, as it will be difficult to admire the beauty of landscapes or architecture after a sleepless night.
Bus is not the only budget way of travelling. If you are courageous enough, you may hitch-hike for free. Just check if hitch-hiking is acceptable in the countries you are going to travel in. In this case you should be ready to drag all your things on your back.
If you like comfort and you prefer spending little time in the transport and more time in the place of your destination, you have to track the low-cost offers from various airlines. It is better to get subscribed to them, so you could automatically get all the interesting offers. Also, check out this guide on how to find a cheap flight ticket.
2. Choose the right accommodation
When planning your trip you should choose the accommodation that suits you best: hotel, hostel, apartment, staying at your friend’s, camping, etc.
If you don’t have many friends around the world and cannot save money staying at their place, couchsurfing can be an option for you. Just get registered on Couchsurfing and you will find there many people who are eager to host travelers from all over the world. I advise you to choose those who have good feedback on their profile and who have already hosted many people.
If you don’t want to live with a stranger, a hostel may be an option for you. Choose the one which is situated in the historical center of the city you travel to. In such a way you will save money on the public transport as you will be able to walk and see all the sights. It is also wise to read all the reviews and check the ratings of the hostel before choosing the one. I use Hostelworld.com for all my hostel bookings. They are very reliable, cheap, and have a wide variety of hostels in various countries.
In case you prefer staying in a hotel, but you have a limited budget, you still have several options: book the hotel when it provides a special discount, live in the hotel which is situated far from the center of the city or share the room (and its price) with your friend. The site Booking.com may help you greatly to choose the right option.
If you go hiking, you should check the places of camping. They should not cost a lot. All you need is a cozy tent and a nice place for it. One of the advantages of this accommodation is that you will be in the middle of the nature and you will be able to enjoy gorgeous views.
3. Save on food
Saving money on food doesn’t mean that you have to refuse any food or go on starvation. It just means that there are some ideas how you may save on your everyday meals.
Choose the right place to dine
First of all, you should avoid eating in luxury restaurants (its a budget trip after all!). Second of all, you should avoid the cafes and restaurants which are located in the tourist zones, as they are usually more expensive than the same establishments which are located not in the downtown. You should check TripAdvisor for reviews of the cafes of your destination and choose those which are proved to be good and have reasonable prices. If you have a chance to ask the locals where they usually eat, it would be perfect, as they definitely know the best places.
Carry your own snacks
Another option is to take some food with you. You can take nuts, dry fruit, fruits and vegetables, cookies and chocolates with you, especially if you know that they are cheaper in your country than abroad. They will be perfect snacks for you. You can also save on main courses, having taken such semi-finished food as noodles, mashed potato, etc. with you.
4. Other ways to save money
You can save a lot of money not only on big expenditure lines, but also on tiny ones. Plan your budget trip with these essential tips in mind.
Walking is better and free of cost
The key to a successful budget trip is walking instead of using public transport. It is free of charge and, in addition, you will be able to see more, than when travelling by subway or by bus.
Shop from the right places
If you want to buy souvenirs, it is better to do that in the shops which are far from the center of the city. Those who think that the souvenirs in the duty-free are cheaper, are wrong. From my own experience, they are more expensive than in the center of the city. If you want to bring some food or drinks as a souvenir, it is better to buy them from a supermarket than in the souvenir shops as it will be much cheaper.
Find work or volunteer programs
If you plan a long lasting trip, you can try finding some small work in the places you are going to visit, it will give you additional money for your trip. Such sites as Help Exchange, WWOOF will help you in it. You can find jobs for half a day or even several hours a day and get money or accommodation in exchange for your work.
Use Chase Premier Rewards Card
If you want to book a luxury hotel stay at a low cost then apply for a Chase Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card. Chase has raised the offer on the Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card to 80,000 bonus points after spending $3,000 in 3 months! Read full review here.
